Personal history: Linda Ramirez was a single mother and a workaholic. Rika
was frequently left in charge of her younger brother, who was in her care
when he died of an undetected heart defect. Rika blamed her mother for her
brother's death. Seeing the doctors work on Marco's dead body in the
hospital made her decide to go into medicine. She left home as soon as
possible and put herself through college. After graduating, she contacted
her mother and apologized for rejecting her; her mother forgave her but
made it clear it was not her fault Marco's condition went undetected. Rika
left her mother on reasonably good terms and joined Starfleet. 

Psychological history: Rika hates her full name and is phobic of snakes.
The issue of her brother's death is still a sore one, but she isn't bitter
towards her mother (or doesn't believe she is). She believes life is easier
when she doesn't take it seriously.
